What’s your food personality?

What kind of eater are you?

We’ve identified a number of common categories that define different people’s attitudes and behaviour around food.

Do you see yourself (or your friends and family) in any of the following personalities?

A. THE PERFECTIONIST EATER

I spend a lot of time thinking about, researching and planning my food to be as healthy as possible. I feel uncomfortable when i’m in situations that are beyond my control.

B. THE FOOD LOVER

I have a passion for good food and am known for cooking delicious, thoughtful meals for family and friends. I use a wide variety of good quality ingredients and would hesitate to guess how many cookbooks I own! There are times when I feel the need for more balance and a little less over-indulgence, but it would kill me to be deprived of the food I love.

C. THE TREND FOLLOWER

I tend to put my faith in whatever the latest craze is, in the hope that it will give me the results i’m looking for. I could give you the low-down on everything from IQS to Paleo to raw food eating (and you’ll usually find lots of ‘superfood’ packets in my pantry). My problem is that i’m still searching for the perfect solution.

D. THE YO-YO DIETER

My eating is always dictated by a desire to lose weight. I’m good at following a structured eating program (or counting calories) but as soon as it’s over or I ‘slip up’, my bad habits re-appear and I often put all the weight back on. I’ve forgotten what normal eating really feels like.

E. THE EMOTIONAL EATER

I know how to eat healthily, BUT easily lapse into over-eating or indulging in high sugar/fat/processed ‘comfort’ foods whenever i’m feeling sad/scared/vulnerable. Food holds a lot of power over me.

F. THE INTUITIVE EATER

I really enjoy food and eat to feel good by listening to my body. I experience very little guilt and am able to confidently eat whatever I want, understanding my limitations and weaknesses. I eat according to my internal cues rather than external messages.

G. THE JUNK-FOOD JUNKY

I often overindulge in take-away and convenience foods. I have little interest in cooking for myself and tend to shun anything that might be considered ‘healthy’.

H. THE NO-NONSENSE EATER

I view food as a necessity rather than a pleasure. I’m very practical and eat only to fuel my body. I don’t waste a lot of time or energy thinking about my food and tend to eat quite simply. I guess you could say that I eat to live, rather than live to eat!

How did you go? What thoughts or resistances popped up as you read over the personalities?

It’s likely that you’re a combination of more than one personality, or have switched between them over a period of time.

As for me, i’ve definitely experienced a lot of D and E in my past, but now try to balance my B characteristics with a good dose of F.

Now, i’m sure there’s nothing intrinsically wrong with an H but somehow I doubt that they could be very good friends with a B! The same could apply to A‘s vs G‘s! What kind of food personalities have you found in your own circle?

TAKE AWAY TIP: Even if you don’t fall neatly in to one of the above categories, we believe there’s a lot of value in understanding (without judgement) your own behaviours and attitudes and how they have evolved over time. This way, you can easily identify your strengths, weaknesses and vulnerabilities to create a personality that REALLY works for you!

P.S. Have you worked out which Exercise Personality you are yet?
