The Équilibre Bride

Its your special day

…and you want everything to be perfect. Much of the attention will inevitably be focused on you  – what you are wearing, how you look. There will be photographs and perhaps film to serve as lingering mementos of the day. It’s only natural that you want to do all that you can to look and feel your very best for your wedding day. But how far are you willing to go?

These days, it seems there is an immense amount of pressure on brides to look a certain way, weigh a certain amount and basically present as a thin, ‘hot’ vision in white. The attention garnered by celebrity weddings has ensured that this has become some sort of cultural phenomenon.

I was concerned to read constant media reports in the lead up to the recent marriage of William and Kate, that focused solely on Kate’s appearance – her weight and what possible diet and fitness regime she might be on. I understand the public fascination with her, but am saddened that our society increasingly focuses on the body beautiful to the exclusion of all else. It sets impossible standards that most of us can’t hope to live up to. Oh, and royal weddings aside, surely the lowest point of the pursuit of bridal beauty must be competing in a reality TV show to win plastic surgery procedures the results of which will only be revealed to your true love when you walk down the aisle? Cringe, shudder. Puts things in to perspective, doesn’t it?

An enlightened alternative

The lead up to your wedding should be one of the happiest times in your life, but it can also present its fair share of stress and upheaval (believe me, the reality is that you just won’t be able to please everyone during this time!) The last thing you need is the added pressure of striving to look like a barbie doll for your big day.

We do think that this time (whether it’s 2 years or 2 months away) presents you and your partner with an ideal opportunity to take positive steps toward creating a strong, healthy body and vibrant lifestyle, not just in readiness for your special day, but more importantly, in preparation for your future life together!

We encourage you to:

  • commit to your health and fitness – make it a priority, but ensure that it’s a positive and enjoyable experience – that way, you’ll be far more likely to stick with it long after your wedding date comes and goes
  • share your journey with your partner and encourage him or her to join you in your health and fitness endeavours. It’s so much easier when you are on the same page and can support each other (include your bridal party members too, if you can)
  • commit to losing weight if you need to, but don’t make it your total focus and don’t leave it until the last 4 weeks when you might be tempted to crash diet or take other extreme measures – it’s simply not healthy and will leave you feeling drained and de-energised at a time when you need to be feeling on top of the world. There are lots of other things you can do in the final stages to help you feel and look wonderful.
  • use your new exercise routine as a form of relaxation and stress release, particularly as the big day draws closer.
  • implement nutrition changes gradually by changing one habit at a time – our resources will help to guide you and change your approach to healthy eating for good.
  • enjoy all the social celebrations in the lead up, its a great time to develop your sense of equilibrium instead of feeling guilty every time you are offered a glass of bubbly.
  • aim to be the best version of yourself on the day, not a carbon copy of someone you’ve seen in a magazine. It’s your day to shine, and your uniqueness is the reason why you are standing there in the first place.
